Let’s Talk Breathwork

How Breath Changes the Nervous System

Breathing is something we do every moment of every day. And yet, most of the time, we do not notice it. The breath is one of the few systems in the body that operates both automatically and consciously. It happens naturally, but we can also take control of it whenever we wish. Because of this, it can become a powerful bridge between the body and the mind.

The Nervous System and Stress

When we feel stressed, the body shifts into a state of activation. Heart rate increases. Breathing becomes shallow. Muscles tighten. This is a natural response. But when this state continues for long periods of time, it can begin to affect mood, sleep, and overall wellbeing. One way to interrupt this process is through breathwork or the conscious guidance of one’s own breath.

How Breath Creates Change

“Breathwork is a powerful practice that can help people access relaxation, emotional release, and mental clarity in ways that traditional meditation might not. By combining intentional breath patterns with music, sound, and sometimes movement, it provides a multi-sensory approach to well-being.” Melanie Rasmussen (Release Breathwork)

Different types of intentional breathing can:

  • signal safety to the body
  • reduce tension
  • improve emotional regulation
  • increase a sense of calm
  • improve awareness and release of emotions

What People Often Experience

During breathwork, people may notice:

  • a sense of relaxation
  • emotional release
  • increased clarity
  • a feeling of being more present

Each experience is different. There is no goal to achieve, only an invitation to notice what arises.

A Guided Space for Breath

Practicing breathwork in a group setting can provide additional support. Being guided through the process allows you to focus on the experience without needing to think about what to do next. Our Breathwork Class on April 16 offers a space to explore this practice in a calm, supportive environment. Click here to learn more and to RSVP.

The breath is always available. And sometimes, returning to it can be a simple way to begin shifting how we feel.
